What Lego and Church Have In Common…

I recently read an inspiring book that tells the story of LEGO and it’s culture of innovation called, ‘Brick by Brick: How LEGO rewrote the rules of innovation’ by David Robertson and it got me thinking…

In my last article I described how God has clearly indicated a WAVE IS COMING, and how he led us to play our part in Building an Ark to rescue and disciple ‘GENTILES’ in our European and Western Context…

This Ark we are building contains both software (a body of teaching or codex) and hardware (innovation hubs) that enable the creation of customisable, programmable, modular systems not too dissimilar to the LEGO Brick and Build System

LEGO claims to have created the world’s first line of buildable action figures and have also launched a line that includes an ‘intelligent brick’! But way BEFORE LEGO had invented any of that, Jesus began the Building of his own Body; a spectacular action figure that continues to grow and expand across the universe; a Living Temple made of ‘spiritual bricks’ he calls ‘Living Stones’

In the New Testament, two ‘pictures’ paint the Church as a Living Building (or Temple) and a Growing Body…

BODY BUILDING

The Buildable (Action) Figures of the LEGO World are in some ways comparable to the Body of Christ described by Apostle Paul; as a growing body made up of many parts. He says, ‘The eye can never say to the hand, “I don’t need you.” The head can’t say to the feet, “I don’t need you.”’ The Body is made up of every moving part and ‘all of you together are Christ’s body, and each of you is a part of it.’

This Body is able to disassemble and reassemble in a myriad of forms not unlike Bionicle Action Figures

LIVING TEMPLE

LEGO utilise a Brick+Build System packaged in an array of cityscapes and various themes (Star Wars theme, Batman theme and so on). Every piece of LEGO is compatible with each system of cityscapes, pieces and themes so that the play experience can continually expand. ‘Snap two of those inert, inorganic blocks together […] and suddenly you open up a world of nearly infinite possibilities. Just six bricks yield more than 915 million potential combinations’ (Robertson)

In like-manner, Christ’s Body is Living Temple ecosystem made up of Living Stones designed to be compatible with every other Living Stone across the cosmos. Pliable in the masters hands, these Living Stones can be reconstructed and moved around, adaptable to all kinds of scenarios, situations and cityscapes- we are a peculiar people shaped and fit-for-purpose in Jesus’ recreation of #AWholeNewWorld

Collectively, the people of God are referred to as ‘God’s Building’

‘You are God’s building. Because of God’s grace to me, I have laid the foundation like an expert builder. Now others are building on it. But whoever is building on this foundation must be very careful. For no one can lay any foundation other than the one we already have- Jesus Christ.’ (1 Corinthians 3:9b-11)

Each of us are like LEGO Bricks, but, more spectacular than mere bricks, we are actually ‘Living Stones’

‘Coming to Him as to a living stone which has been rejected by men, but is choice and precious in the sight of God, you also, as living stones, are being built up as a spiritual house for a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.’ (1 Peter 2:4-5)

As Living Stones, like the LEGO brick, we have become a universal building block for catalysing creativity across the cosmos. However, in LEGO system, it’s up to each of us to make the bricks ‘click’, but in the Body of Christ, Jesus himself holds everything together in perfect unity; He makes the whole body fit together perfectly. As each part does its own special work, it helps the other parts grow, so that the whole body is healthy and growing and full of love.

However, unlike the LEGO Brick or any other kind of manmade brick- we are true originals. The word authentic, derived from the Greek authentikos, means ‘original’. When we become our authentic selves, the Living Stones Jesus intends us to be, we will be truly original. That makes us uniquely different to LEGO or any other manmade brick. Manmade bricks are standardised and have to ‘click’ with manmade systems whereas living stones are organic, adaptive and responsive to their environment…

The FOUNDATION of the BUILDING

LEGO have within their arsenal of pieces plate boards that allow you to build on the foundation almost anything, and what is built is able to stand…

Anyone who builds on that foundation may use a variety of materials- gold, silver, jewels, wood, hay or straw. But on the judgment day fire will reveal what kind of work each builder has done. The fire will show if a person’s work has any value. If the work survives, that builder will receive a reward. But if the work is burned up, the builder will suffer great loss. The builder will be saved, but like someone barely escaping through a wall of flames. Don’t you realise that all of you together are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God lives in you?’ (1 Corinthians 3:12-16)

The foundation of everything we build is Jesus, we build on this foundation by Hearing His Words and Obeying them; ‘Therefore everyone who hears these words of Mine and acts on them, may be compared to a wise man who built his house on the rock.’ (Matthew 7:24-27)

We call this process of building through hearing and obeying Jesus the Truth+Dare experience…

Living Stones are responsive to the Builder…

The great virtue of the Body of Christ is its elasticity – it can expand exponentially, like LEGO bricks, Living Stones can be fitted together and reshaped in whatever way Jesus sees fit to do so…

Grasp for a moment, the potential of a tightly focused, endlessly expandable, and fully integrated system built around Living Stones- this provides unlimited Play Potential…

We have an important mission, society is constantly evolving and the gospel must extend to new people groups, places and spheres through shape-shifting forms. Therefore what is required is endless experimentation and innovation coupled with discipline and focus to see the emergence of myriads of new forms expanding across every niche, nook and cranny of society

PLANTING A MOVEMENT- An Entire Ecosystem of Play Possibilities

Planting Movements is like building with LEGO’s modular system or ecosystem. In movements of New Forms, there are multiple components as the church multiplies in all shapes and sizes. Like a bag of liquorice all-sorts, one-size-does-not-fit all.

A Movement is characterised by the insight that we must evolve from forming stand-alone churches, communities, disciples or enterprises and be involved in the formation of an entire ecosystem of play possibilities where Jesus is the unifying element in an ever-expanding cohesive system where everything interrelates…

New forms emerge as we imagine the next generation of interactive play experiences so that everyone gets to play the game.

Jesus’ Church, like the LEGO brand, has the capacity to reawaken a sense of experimentation and play that resides within everyone. John Wimber, late apostolic leader of the Vineyard Churches wanted to reawaken this latent sense of play and participation in the Church and often said that in church-life, Everyone Gets to Play’

Unlike made-for-pew church experiences, in the emerging new forms of church, you must bring your own imagination and experience to the game- this is no spectator sport- it requires you Bring+Share your part to the play-experience. Every part is needed in the cosmic game plan.

In Christ we are a new creation and we get to share in God’s creativity – in the cosmic dance- the whole world being made new as the sons and daughters of God are revealed…the world is not worthy of them, they are made for more than pew-fodder at a Sunday service, they are created to inherit the Kingdom that was prepared for them from the foundation of the earth, to receive their inheritance and to accomplish the good works God has prepared for them to do…

Kingdom Movements

Movements owe much of their existence to a core set of founding principles. Every movement, at their inception, is imbued with a core purpose and a set of values that emanate from the founder and go on to shape the culture of the movement and largely define its future…

Jesus is the founder of a Kingdom Movement that set out it’s core founding principles as embodied in the teachings, sayings and actions of Jesus…

He said ‘I will build my Church, and the gates of hell will not overpower it’

Are you a Living Stone or a Dead Brick?

Are you building your life on His Foundation?

Who has Jesus, the Master Builder, ‘Clicked’ and ‘Connected’ You with?

What Part Do You Play in the Buildable Body of Christ?
