Truth+Dare…(Dangerous Games 2)

Truth+Dare is the Essence of Making Disciples…

Jesus Experiments in Truth
A while ago I tried out an experiment…
It was called ‘Jesus Experiments in Truth…‘ in which I went through ALL the things Jesus told us to do in the gospels and highlighted them…

The question I then asked myself was ‘How many of these things am I actually obeying?’

This whole experiment came after reading Matt 28:18-20 where Jesus told us to train people to obey the things he taught…

Up until that point…what jumped out at me was the idea; ‘teach people’ but not the phrase ‘to obey

Imagine you are teaching someone to…make a hamburger…at the end of the session, you wouldn’t so much be looking for an applause in relation to how great your teaching was (although of course you might be flattered by that)…you would want the apprentice to demonstrate that they could now actually make a hamburger…

What is important is that the apprentice has been able to put into practice that which they have learnt

So whereas formerly the emphasis had always been on ‘teaching‘…latterly the accent has been on ‘obedience

Are the people we are training (making disciples of) actually beginning to obey the things Jesus taught…?
Do we and they know what the Commands of Christ are?

As our ‘teaching’ became simpler…our ‘obedience’ became greater…

It’s easier to put into practice bite sized instructions or to think about how you might obey a small passage of scripture

Complex teaching can lead to greater head knowledge but not necessarily greater obedience…ever noticed that?

We simplified the whole process of ‘teaching to obey’ into a game we like to call ‘Truth+Dare’

Once we discover ‘TRUTH’ (through Scripture or from the Holy Spirit) we ‘DARE’ each other to do it…

This game is a ‘play‘ on a game we have in English called ‘Truth or Dare‘…but whereas in that game you have to tell the ‘truth’ or forfeit by performing a ‘dare’
In our game you experience both (TruthANDDare) together!

Our game is a lot more dangerous and fun though…have you ever tried to actually put Jesus’ gaming instructions into practice?

How To Play
Just simply take a Command of Christ (Truth) and Play it Out in Practice (Dare)
There are so many instructions of Jesus to ‘play with’
We can hear Jesus both through the Written Word and through the Holy Spirit…(Truth). But we really ‘know’ the truth when we have experienced it in real life application

This is perhaps the simplest game in the world…however, it’s not easy!

The Essence of Disciple-Making
Truth+Dare is really the essence of being a disciple…by playing this game we can learn to Hear and Obey Jesus daily…

Many of us like to discuss the truth, debate the truth, read the truth, seek understanding in relation to the truth…but the environments we create rarely ask us to put into practice the truth we’ve encountered together…

2 Core Questions
2 of the most core questions we can ask in relation to Making Disciples is:
1. What is Jesus Saying to Us?
2. What Are We Going to Do About It?

Not Just Hearers BUT Doers
Jesus actually expected us to Act on what we Hear…
Ever wondered why He hammered this message home so often…

‘You are my friends if you do what I command’ (John 15:14)
‘If you live me, obey my commandments’ (John 14:15)
‘Anyone who does the will of my father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother (Matt 12:50)
‘Not everyone who calls out to me, “Lord! Lord! Will enter the Kingdom of Heaven. Only those who actually do the will of my Father in Heaven will enter’ (Matt 7:21)
‘When you obey my commandments, you remain in my love, just as I obey my fathers commandments and remain in his love!’ (John 15:10)

Play the Game in Teams
When we meet together as Simple Communities…we facilitate a Discovery (DBS) Approach to the Truth+Dare Game…

Instead of just asking the ‘2 Core Questions’ (see above)…we extend to these 4 Questions…

1. What Does it SAY?
2. What Does it MEAN?
3. What Are We Going to DO About It?
4. Who Can We SHARE this With?

This results in an obedience-based culture. A Disciple Making Culture

However, playing ‘Truth+Dare’ of doesn’t really work very well unless you include the very essential ‘Report Back’ component…
When Jesus sent out the 12 and 72 with his Pioneer Mission Gaming Instructions in Matt 10/Luke 10, they returned to Report Back all they had Said and Done (Mark 6:30)…let’s do likewise…if we say we are going to do something…let’s do it…then Report Back to others how we got on doing it…

Let’s avoid being like the son who said he was going to do something and then didn’t do it (Matt 21:28-32)

Let Our Yes be Yes and Our No be No…anything beyond that is from the Evil One…

Let The Games Begin…
When was the last time you heard Jesus tell you to do something? (TRUTH)
Have you done it yet? (DARE)

Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them (John 13:17)
