Three Things That Will Last For Eternity…

[Diagram: ‘The Propeller’]

THREE TREASURES FOR ETERNITY

When all is said and done, three things will remain from now into eternity. These three things, or virtues are FAITH, HOPE and LOVE and the the greatest is LOVE.

Knowing these things will remain forever gives us a profound advantage. We are given a peek into eternity and an awareness of what can be grown in this life that will have an eternal consequence

So with that in mind, let’s take a look at how we can grow in these three virtues throughout our lifetime

IN THE BEGINNING

Just as there are Three Main Virtues, there are also Three Main Sins. In the beginning Satan tempted and deceived Adam and Eve- the first humans with these:

‘When the woman saw that the fruit was good for food and pleasing to the eye and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he at it’ (Genesis 3:6)

THREE THINGS THE WORLD OFFERS

For the world offers only a craving for physical pleasure, a carving for everything we see, and pride in our achievements and possessions  (1 John 2:16)

Notice the Three Things are the three temptations that faced Adam and Eve:

Craving for physical pleasure (the fruit was good for food)

Craving for everything we see (pleasing to the eye)

Pride in our achievements and possessions/Pride of Life (desirable for gaining wisdom)

THREE TEMPTATIONS OF CHRIST

There were also the three temptations Jesus faced in the desert (Matt 4:1-11 and Luke 4:1-13).

Turn Stones into Bread (craving for physical pleasure)

Throw Yourself off the temple so everyone can see you fly (pleasing to the eye)

Bow Down To Satan and He Will give you the world (desirable for wisdom)

SPIRIT, SOUL AND BODY

‘Now may the God of peace make you holy in every way, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless until our Lord Jesus Christ comes again. God will make this happen, for he who calls you is faithful’ (1 Thess 5:23-24)

We can keep the lust of the flesh (BODY) in check by growing in LOVE

We can keep the lust of the eyes (SOUL) in check by growing in HOPE

We can keep the pride of life (SPIRIT) in check by growing in FAITH

A DAILY PATTERN FOR PILGRIMS

As ‘aliens and foreigners’ in this world and as ‘citizens of heaven’, we are called to ‘pick up our cross daily’ as disciples of Jesus. Denying the three things the world offers and growing in the three virtues of heaven.

We can begin each day in FAITH

Work through the day with HOPE

And gather together with others in LOVE

KEEP THREE SECRETS
We all experience three temptations we are to avoid, three virtues we are to grow in and Jesus instructs us in 3 Secrets we can keep that will be rewarded by The Father (Matt 6:1-18)

Fast in Secret (abstain from the lust of the flesh and grow in love as we share the Lord’s supper)

Give in Secret (abstain from the lust of the eyes and grow in hope as we work to supply the needs of others)

Pray in Secret (obtain true wisdom through faith as we pray ‘Your Kingdom Come, Your Will Be Done, On Earth as it is in Heaven’)

THE ETERNAL BATTLE

We face this eternal battle daily, the battle between the desires of this world and the way of heave. The battle becomes easier when we face it together with fellow Pilgrims. That’s why it’s good to journey closely on the path with at least 2/3 others. Each of us face temptations that are common to humankind
