Stop Feeding Us Rubbish!

We’ve all heard the expression ‘You Are What You Eat

Well, there is a lot of truth in that statement…let’s take Daniel as an example…

Daniel and his 3 friends were chosen by the Babylonian government to go through a 3-year training programme (like a university degree) before entering royal service. At Daniel’s suggestion, the friends agreed on an unusual but radical idea, they decided not to eat any of the ‘rich food‘ on daily offer from the palace but instead chose to commit to a simpler diet of water and vegetables.

The Royal staff were concerned about their unusual Dietary Plan, what if they got ill? If they looked pale and thin compared to the other young people their age after eating this alternative meal selection the king wouldn’t be too happy (3 year student grants down the drain). To ease the worries of the faculty staff, Daniel suggested a 10 Day Trial period. But at the end of the 10 days, Daniel and his friends looked healthier and better nourished than the other young adults who had eaten the ‘rich’ food menu of the king.

So from then on throughout the rest of their ‘degree’ the 4 lads just ate vegetarian food instead of the food and wine provided for the other students…

It just so happens, that after committing to this ‘Daniel Diet’ it was noted that The Four had an unusual aptitude for understanding every aspect of literature and wisdom. Daniel also had the special ability to interpret the meanings of visions and dreams…co-incidence?

At the end of the 3-year training period, the king called the 4 young men in for a discussion. They impressed him far beyond the other students he had interviewed, so they ‘got the position’ in the royal service.

Whenever the king called them in for a consultation, he found they were 10 TIMES More Capable in matters that required wisdom and balanced judgment than any of the magicians and enchanters in his entire kingdom…interesting what a change of diet can do [Daniel 1]

In Britain we have the highest rate of obesity in Western Europe (apart from Iceland and Malta)

Something has clearly gone terribly wrong with our relationship with food

I should know…my eating patterns have gone into negative spirals on more than one occassion. Whilst in Istanbul a couple of years ago something I ate triggered really bad digestive problems which, for over 3 months, made it impossible to eat anything other than fruit+veg and fish. The same thing happened less than 2 years later during a trip to the South of Spain, following that, I could eat only fruit and veg and fish and ‘light foods’ for 6 months. Whenever I ate ‘heavy’ or ‘rich’ foods I would have extremely severe digestive problems…the interesting thing was that I had sensed The Spirit inviting me and warning me to change my eating habits years before and had pretty much ignored him…

During times of Daniel Eating…I felt much healthier, lost lots of weight, and felt fresh and invigorated. For some reason though, I am still attracted to the ‘rich food’ that actually makes me feel worse after eating it..

And apparently, I’m not the only one who has these kinds of problems…in the last 3 decades the number of overweight and obese people has increased dramatically to 2.1 Billion people globally! That’s almost 30% of the population of the whole planet who are now overweight or obese, raising the risk of diabetes, heart disease and cancers…(Guardian)

But what is happening to us? Why are are we getting so fat? Where does this problem of obesity stem from?

Contrary to popular belief…it’s not just simply that people are greedier and are stuffing their faces with more food and exercising less…

‘One of the main changes to our diet ‘stems back to the 1970s when US agriculture embarked on the mass-production of corn and of high-fructose corn syrup, commonly used as a sweetener in processed foods.

This led to a massive surge in the quantities of cheaper food being supplied to American supermarkets, everything from cheap cereal to cheap biscuits. As a result, burgers got bigger and fries (fried in corn oil) got fattier.

High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS), a highly sweet by-product of waste corn, was also incredibly cheap. It began being used in every conceivable food – pizzas, coleslaw, meat. It provided a “just baked” sheen on bread and cakes.

By the mid 1980s, corn syrup had replaced sugar in fizzy soft drinks. The move made financial sense from the soft drink companies’ point of view, as corn syrup was a third cheaper than sugar.

But it was also sweeter and, argue some scientists, more addictive. In the next two decades, the average American’s consumption of fizzy drinks almost doubled – from 350 cans a year to 600.

Fructose is easily converted to fat in the body, and scientists have found that it also suppresses the action of a vital hormone called leptin.

“Leptin goes from your fat cells to your brain and tells your brain you’ve had enough, you don’t need to eat that second piece of cheesecake,” says Dr Robert Lustig, an endocrinologist.

He says when the liver is overloaded with sugars, leptin simply stops working, and as a result the body doesn’t know when it’s full.

“It makes your brain think you’re starving and now what you have is a vicious cycle of consumption, disease and addiction. Which explains what has happened the world over,” he says.’ (What Caused the Obesity Crisis)

We have been fed a lie

No wonder Daniel ‘determined not to defile himself by eating the food and wine given to him by the king and asked the chief of staff for permission not to eat these unacceptable foods‘ (Daniel 1:8)

Adulterated Food is ‘impure, unsafe or unwholesome food’.

Cadbury’s, the famous British chocolate makers are a company started by a Quaker entrepreneurial family stemming back to the days that prophetic preacher George Fox and the Valiant Sixty rode up and down the country of Great Britain on horseback speaking out against injustice and social inequality…this led to many followers that became Quakers resulting in widespread persecution including barring Quakers from ‘middle class professions’. As a result many Quakers started their own businesses. Richard and George were the 3rd generation of Cadbury’s business owners and they were determined to only use the best quality ingredients in their chocolate, which of course is why their chocolate tasted so good. Their motto was ‘Absolutely Pure…Therefore Best.’ And that was at a time when unscrupulous business men adulterated their chocolate with ‘brick dust’ and other stuff to keep costs low and profits high. (not much has changed, right?)

Quaker-run businesses refused to adulterate their products for profit because of their principles that stemmed from the days of George Fox and his Business Principles …. which of course were derived from the Bible

‘At that time there was much concern in Parliament about the adulteration of food, including cocoa. The new unadulterated Cadbury’s cocoa essence was heralded as a major breakthrough and resulted in the passing of the Adulteration of Food Acts in 1872 and 1875. Cadbury received a remarkable amount of free publicity during this period and sales increased dramatically. The marketing of this cocoa essence helped turn a small business into a vast worldwide company.’ (The Story of Cadbury)

‘Adulteration is an addition of another substance to a food item in order to increase the quantity of the food item in raw form or prepared form, which may result in the loss of actual quality of food item. These substances may be other available food items or non-food items. Among meat and meat products some of the items used to adulterate are water or ice, dead carcasses, or carcasses of animals other than the animal meant to be consumed.’ (Wikipedia)

You may remember a few years back when we found out that the meat in burgers we thought was beef, was actually ‘horse meat‘…it seems our society has forgotten the ‘Absolutely Pure…Therefore Best’ principles of business derived from the Quakers…but that’s no surprise as we have deliberately forgotten God and His principles and standards for business as it doesn’t suit our perceived profit margins (despite the fact that doing business God’s way actually increased the profits of Cadbury’s and other Quaker Businesses in the 19th Century)

The food industry needs a radical shake-up!

What can we do to make sure our food is not ‘adulterated?’

What can we do to provide a working alternative (as the Quaker Businesses did?)

Daniel who was by now one of the highest officals in the government, later on in his career, spent another period of 3 weeks going without ‘rich food’. That meant no meat or wine and he even went without fragrant lotions until the 3 weeks were over. As a result he had a vision concerning the destiny of his nation and other emerging leading nations of the world…

Have you ever thought that what you eat has the power to affect the destiny of nations?

Newforms recently hosted an Enterprise Conference in Boston, UK, (The UK’s former Fattest Town) for budding entrepreneurs. Through our ‘Dream Future‘ game, we encouraged delegates to ‘imagine Boston 10 years from now.’ It’s perhaps not surprising that most of the suggestions of new enterprise springing out of this activity related to the food and tourist industry…and the suggestions were all healthy ideas around bringing together communities around innovative food solutionsSt Botolph, a travelling monk from 7th Century who founded Boston, spirit lives on as the patron saint of Food and Travel of the town and with the energy of the Entrepreneurs that were in the room during the conference, there’s no doubt that Boston can return to some of it’s founding principles and use their main industries of Food Production + Transport to better effect… but what of the future of Britain, The West and the Nations of the World?

Something needs to change as we are literally eating ourselves to death…

Maybe we need to come together as Pilgrims in Circles of 2-5 people and agree not to eat No Rich Foods for 10 Days Trials or 21 day Periods like Daniel and His Friends did…and perhaps, as a result of this, God will reveal to us new and innovative solutions to the problems of this world- like the current problem of Global Obesity and the related Health+Nutrition Issues

Great article on an important though much-ignored topic.

There is also a political dimension to this issue, with the industrial food sector receiving both direct and indirect grants and subsidies by western governments. This fact results in an uneven playing field and disadvantages independent food producers and suppliers.

My home city of Bristol is currently pioneering a lot of alternatives to this unsustainable food model. It is an issue that needs addressing on multiple fronts.

Thanks for sharing.

Hi Al,

Yes you’re absolutely right…there is a strong political factor to all of this!

Would love to hear more about Bristols pioneering alternatives!

The Mennonites had a cook-book called the more with less cookbook. Simple tasty cheap meals that came out of their belief in affordable healthy food for everyone. You can still get it on Amazon. Very tasty – and interesting to see how they’ve been saying the same things as you for a long time now. We grew up on those meals in the 70s 🙂

Hi Cassie!

That Mennonite cookbook sounds great! I will have to look it up!

Horace Silver (a worshipper?) sang about this in 1970!
