Gathering the Oikos of the Person of Peace (Game Tip 1)

20140430-140704.jpg

YOU WILL NOT FIND OIKOS BY APPEALING TO THE CROWD OR WINNING ONLY INDIVIDUALS TO JESUS…

IF YOU ONLY FOCUS EXCLUSIVELY ON INDIVIDUALS YOU WILL NOT MULTIPLY COMMUNITIES…

If you are aiming to Find Persons of Peace who Gather Their Household (OIKOS)

In Everything You Do…

‘Think Groups NOT Individuals’

Think ‘HOUSEHOLDS OF PEACE’ and YOU WILL FIND ‘PERSONS OF PEACE!

Many of us in the West (and particularly Europe) have grown up in a ‘modern capitalist culture‘ that often valued the ‘individual’ at the expense of ‘community’. This factor, linked to the widespread breakdown of ‘family’ (particularly strong extended families) and other ‘market forces’ has produced a way of life that’s the ‘opposite’ of living out of ‘oikos’ (extended families)

However…new generations are rising up (GenXYZ) that are living in an increasingly ‘Connected Age‘…They may not have had natural extended families, but they are creating their own communities both on and offline…connecting through Social Media (YouTube, FaceBook, Twitter, Instagram) and through the related offline Meet-Up/Cafe Culture…In these and many other creative ways, Generation XYZ (particularly GenY) are creating new extended households (Oikos) that could become Households of Peace

In our PioneerMission XP’s (Experiences)…we often take teams out, then have them split into 2’s. Our Trainers often model with these apprentices How To ‘Spy the Land‘ and ‘Connect with GROUPS’ (Oikos).

So we will point to the group of teenagers eating and talking together in a corner of McDonalds…or to the gathering of North African men meeting and drinking coffee in an Algerian Cafe/Restaurant…or we’ll show them the single mums meeting with their prams in the local cafe after dropping their older kids off at school…

The Questions Are…
How would you Pray for such-and-such group?
How would you Connect with such-and-such group?
How would you Share Gospel with such-and-such group?
How would you Train such-and-such group?
How would you Multiply out from such-and-such group?
(again…thanks to those who are globally pioneering CPM’s for these ‘terms’ and ‘principles‘)

When you are Looking for Persons of Peace and aiming to Connect with People…are you looking for and thinking about Individuals OR Groups?

Many ‘traditional’ and ‘contemporary’ churches are still ‘stuck’ in modern individualistic methodologies…

For example:
Does our intercessory PRAYER– target only individuals, or do we intercede as groups for groups/whole communities (People Groups/Places)? (we could learn a lot from those in the Bible, like Apostle Paul for example, who prayed for whole communities and whole churches…not only, and not primarily for individuals)

When we are aiming to CONNECT with new People…are we searching our people groups/places trying to find an individual to connect with…or are we intentionally and actively looking for GROUPS (ready-made communities of peace)…when Paul and Barnabas (or Paul and Silas) were sent out…and they went from town to town…what did they do to Connect? And was their aim to connect with individuals and then build a One-to-One relationship with them?

Does our SHARING THE GOSPEL intentionally spread from Group to Group…or do we have Evangelists and Witnesses only focused on ‘Individuals’ coming to Jesus or ‘Crowds’? (When the Disciples were scattered in Acts 8:1…do you think they gossiped the gospel primarily to individuals?)

HOW MANY INDIVIDUALS CAME TO FAITH in THE NEW TESTAMENT NOT CONNECTED TO OIKOS?

Take a closer look…

But what’s even more startling is…Christians who are seeking to form new Jesus Centred-Spiritual Communities with the ‘unchurched‘ (fresh expressions, simple/organic churches, housechurches, even ‘missional communities’) are still using ‘modern individualistic‘ strategies to both win new people to Christ, disciple them and then (eventually) try to get these ‘individuals’ to gather their communities some undefined time in the distant future

We know this from personal experience travelling and training…and because we also made these common mistakes too!

At NewformsResources we Say…
Pray in Groups (houses of prayer)
Connect With Groups (people groups/places- pockets of people)
Share Gospel in Groups (at least 2’s and to Oikos/whole communities of people)
Train in Groups (circles and communities)
Gather in Groups (simple communities)
Multiply in Groups (each person is part of at least 2 groups- in the first group they are trained and see modelled and practice what they will do in their second group- they go through the MAWL process)

Let me ask you a question?
WHO IS IN YOUR OIKOS?
WHO has God placed you with?

You can only find what you are looking for…if you know what it looks and feels like…
You can only train others to do…what you have yourself experienced…

Do you have an intentional extended family on a mission? (oikos)
Do members of your family know how to start their own Jesus-centred families while keeping in touch with their parents and grandparents?
Do you operate out of team (oikos) or as a Lone Ranger?

As a Lone Ranger…you can continue to reach and disciple lone rangers who in turn, as they are birthed into ‘christianity‘ as lone rangers…will perhaps perpetuate the individualistic ‘all about me‘ culture they have experienced. They will ‘go to church‘ so ‘they can get fed‘…and will ‘do programmes and outreach to individuals but only at a time and place that suits themselves‘ and if they ‘grow up‘ to want to think of ‘others beyond themselves‘ they may engage in ‘one-to-one discipling‘ so that the new person can get ‘all they need‘ too.

But we’ll tackle the subject of One-to-One Discipleship in a future post

As for Me and My HOUSEHOLD (Oikos), WE WILL Serve the LORD

Sounds good. But HOW? 🙂 In an individualistic Western European society that (still) highly values privacy and individualism… how do we engage existing groups? Maybe others are naturally skilled or gifted at doing it this way, but for others it might be more difficult. Such saints need practical tools and instruction. How to do it? 🙂
